Today the Regulator of Social Housing (The Regulator) has published its first set of consumer standards gradings following planned inspections, with Watford Community Housing Trust and Nottingham Community Housing Association Limited being rated as C1. We extend our congratulations to both organisations as we are acutely aware of the hard work that must have been put in to achieve this grading.
After much anticipation about how the sector will measure up against the new consumer standards, these gradings are welcome news and the judgements will provide invaluable guidance on the Regulators approach to inspection. We have set out the key points to be taken from the judgements are as follows:
- Where any deficiencies are identified, RPs need to ensure that they put in place plans to solve these to secure compliance.
- There is a focus on health and safety for tenants, the quality and condition of homes and the way in which repairs are carried out and managed. This is no surprise but underlines the importance of compliance with the Safety and Quality Standard.
- Tenant engagement was a focus with it being noted that wide ranging opportunities to scrutinise is very important, as well as proactively implementing changes and improvements as a result of feedback received.
- Even if C1 status is awarded, RPs must continue to monitor and review their compliance with the consumer standards.
