News on measures to ensure decent homes for all

It has been announced that the Government will consult on a new Decent Homes Standard ('the Standard') for the rented sectors. We have not been told of a timescale yet, just that it will launch as soon as possible.

The Standard will look to ensure that safe, secure housing is the standard people can expect for  social housing and privately rented properties.

Key points from the news;

  • Awaab’s Law for the social rented sector will be brought forward this Autumn.
  • Protections will be extended to private rented sector through the Renters' Rights Bill (we await further detail).
  • New access to information requirements will be introduced for housing associations so tenants can access the information they need to hold their landlords to account; this will  improve the quality of the housing and services they provide.
  • A Competence and Conduct standard will be introduced for the social rented sector that will ensure staff have the right skills, behaviours and experience to carry out their role (including qualification requirements for senior managers and executives).
